The hidden message...
Many different thoughts has me wonder which to share first.
Was this kid 'dumb' and getting attention the only way he could? Maybe he was even hard of hearing because in those days they didn't test for hearing. or for that matter, sight except for the chart.
Perhaps the kid was an outsider, a different class, or from a dysfunctional home, especially compared with the sweet well behaved middle class kids.
Maybe he was bored w/ the subjects that apparently had no relevance.
No one questioned what the school itself could or should do to provide a more community connecting curriculum.
Note too, the many big successes of people who grow up to be highly acclaimed entertainers having been the class clown when young.
Weren't those the days too that every driver was considered wrong in any accident, even though many of the cars themselves had serious defects, no matter the circumstances of the problem. That is, until the publication of one serious book, by one serious guy. A book that proved without a shadow of a doubt that the cars had terrible problems, causing damages unimaginable now. The book, "Unsafe at Any Speed"... the guy, Ralph Nader. Was it GM that hired people to try and 'get something' on Ralph. But they couldn't. He came out clean as a whistle.

Teachers needed a course in handling disruptive students
There were (and still are) many ways to stop such disruptive behavior. The teachers allowed it to go on too long and esculate. An effective teacher would have known how to stop it right away. The film is nonsense. Who ever adviced the script writer was a poor educator.

The trouble with "That Class"
Let's follow Farm-twanged Kay Reynolds and her class as they get branded as trouble all because of one student, Jim Baldwin! He's always getting in trouble with his teacher for interrupting classes, and causing her headaches. It soon gets personal with the gang too, as Jim breaks one of the kid's parents glasses in a party! ("My best china!"), soon they're a menace 2 society by, horrors, putting up an illegal sign on the school! (The sign, horrors upon horrors, reads "Yea Juniors") Jim must be stopped! But how in heavens name, HOW? lol

The Show-Off is dead-ON!
Thank goodness there are films like this to keep our kids safe from the dangers of tom-foolery and other such shennanigans! It's high tme somebody spoke out about the dangerous levels of independent thought and emotion being shown by the youth of today. That touchy-feely crap may play out in the hippy-groovy-funky States like Oregon, but not in *my* America, mister! Everyone knows that Cardboard Sign Hanging is a "Gateway" action, that has been scientifically proven to lead to Speed, Cocaine, Heroin, and R-Rated movies. The Dad in this film says it best... in his day, when there was a party, everyone was expected to act like perfect little ladies and gentlemen. Makes you wonder about the Youth of Today.
Seriously, I love these old "How you should feel/act/obey" flicks, and this one doesn't dissapoint!

Cardboard signs? What next!?
The main concern of this film is that the bad behavior of a few reflects on them all. However, it's difficult to take seriously because the showing-off is so lame.
He slipped in his chair! He made the drama club laugh at the auditions! And now, they've hung up a cardboard sign over the school! What will everyone think of the Junior Class!?
This town desperately needs a jazz club.

Social control
One of the "What would you do?" series, this time Junior class officer Kay details the offenses of class clown Jim. The final big prank is hanging a cardboard sign saying "Yea Juniors" outside the front of the school. Oh the disgrace! The principal tells the students to come up with ideas to keep Jim and his pals in line. The desire of the principal to avoid embarrassment, avoid unpleasant phone calls, and provide discipline and order, is presented as the students' job. What would you do?
